Dear 60B Delegate,
Following Congressman Keith Ellison’s decision to run for State Attorney General, our own State Representative Ilhan Omar is now running for US Congress! Now that there is an open seat in our district, this provides us an opportunity to discuss the future of our shared community and the continued need for next generation progressive leadership.
Though we will have plenty of opportunities in the coming weeks to get to know one another, I want to tell you a little bit about myself and why I hope to have your support for State House in 60B. Right now, I am a student at the University of Minnesota Law School, where I am focusing on consumer protection and the intersection of law and science. I also serve in the Minnesota National Guard and work in the special litigation division of the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. While these experiences have certainly given me insight into the importance of leadership and the ways in which public policy can impact and improve people’s lives, it is my lived experience that will make me an effective voice and advocate in Saint Paul.
I will not run a traditional campaign for office, simply because I have not lived a traditional life. I know what it is like to live in poverty, to experience homelessness, to live without health care, and to have family members come into direct contact with the criminal justice system. I also know the value of a strong public education and the importance of community in ensuring every child gets a fair chance at life.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks. If ever you would like to get coffee or just talk about the issues, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at (320) 226-3494, I want to be there for you as a candidate and as your next State Representative.
